Hey everybody, today our subject today is going to be on extended water fasting. Oh, I know a lot of you right off the bat are gonna be like, “Uh. Eh, not for me. That doesn’t sound healthy. My doctor told me that’s not something you should do,” or, “My buddy tried it and got sick from it,” or whatever it might be. There’s a lot of misconceptions out there about fasting.

I hope that anecdotal evidence means something to you. Meaning, I might not have scientific proof, although there are volumes of scientific research done on fasting that shows the positive health benefits and how it extends life. From just a practice in one little corner of Pennsylvania (mine) for 34 years, having experienced fasting from a clinical perspective, not having done official research, but just what I’ve seen in my patients, I hope that would carry some weight with you. That you wouldn’t just automatically disregard fasting as being something that can be applied in health.

Guys, listen to me. If you were to ask me the one thing, the one technique, the one strategy that I have seen work more consistently and more powerfully in restoring lost health in an individual struggling with poor health, I will tell you to try extended water fasting. There’s not even a close second. With extended water fasting, I have seen things that are near miraculous. Understand, people don’t come to me first, this functional medicine doctor. They come to me after they’ve tried everything else. “Doctor of last resort” here! We see some pretty sick people as a result, people that have been given up on by the medical profession. We’ve had to resort to what some people might think are extreme measures to get people back to health.

One of those things is extended water fasting. What we do with the extended water fasting is as the name implies. We take people off of all food. The only thing they can have is water. It may start off with just one or two days. We may need to prepare them beforehand for a month before they’re able to do this with more comfort, because it does matter. If you prepare someone for a fast correctly, they’re gonna be a lot more able to do this without a lot of side effects. Ultimately, building up to where we would go five days of extended water fasting, in some cases even longer maybe a week or two. I’ve had patients go longer than three weeks. I’ve seen some crazy things, turnarounds in people’s health, where they were covered in eczema and it went away. Where they were Type II diabetic and it cleared up, went away, and reversed their diabetes.

The list is so long. When you have conditions like this, where no one else is helping, and you see this take place even anecdotally, clinically, in someone’s office, you start to, at a certain period of time, realize that, “Man, we were made to fast.” God made us with this ability to fast. (The Bible actually talks about fasting quite a bit.) What’s happening whenever we’re fasting takes place down at the cell level. It’s called autophagy.

It’s where your body will preferentially start burning up and utilizing for its energy needs diseased and damaged tissues in your body. Remember, tissues are made from cells. Look up the word autophagy. When your body preferentially will go in and start getting rid of these tissues. That’s where you start to see this profound change in a person’s health where nothing else was working before. Now, their body can take these reserves that might be dedicated towards the digestion and assimilation of food and now directing into this autophagy process, in the overall healing process, and the person will start to see amazing, amazing changes.

Check out autophagy. Look it up. It’s the cornerstone of what happens when a person abstains from food. It’s how God made our bodies. It’s what our ancestors did. Like I mentioned to you earlier, there is a lot of research out there. If you’re willing to do just a little bit of investigating on your own, you’ll see the research is out there. It’s already been proven, the benefits of abstaining from food. By the way, one of my favorite quotes is Ben Franklin where he said, “Many dishes, many diseases.” It’s the opposite, too, when you take away the food for a period of time.
