Hey guys, today I want to talk with you about a recent study that I just read. It’s actually a report that sent to me from Dr. Ron Grisanti at Functional Medicine University. Dr. Ron puts out these great reports. They are concise, full of great information, one page long, and easy to digest. I love getting his material.
But this one, in particular, showed a Canadian study that was printed by the Canadian Medical Journal Association. It showed a study of over 400 people that focused on a relationship in the body between a Vitamin B12 deficiency and elevated homocysteine levels in the blood, and how that correlated to increased carotid artery plaquing. There was about just short of 20 percent, I believe, of the people in the study, which showed this strong link between Vitamin B12 deficiency and then significantly elevated homocysteine levels, which is an inflammatory marker that we test for in the blood. Then, more importantly, it correlated to this carotid artery, the amount of area showing plaquing in the carotid artery. It’s something that I see in my patient’s bloodwork a lot. Elevated homocysteine levels indicate that people are chronically inflamed. It was just interesting to read this relationship as it relates then to the risk of heart attack, strokes, and other cardiovascular type events.
So, boning up on Vitamin B12. We use methylated B12 in our practice for patients, but you can’t beat B12 in the diet, no matter what we do supplement-wise. The most B12 rich foods are going to be organ meats. We would recommend, of course, that you would get your organ meats, like liver and kidney, from animals that are clean. They’re going to be pasture raised, organically raised, clean proteins that we can consume safely. Then things like grass-fed beef. Sardines are another big one. A lot of you probably love sardines, out there. I know that I do, but sardines are very rich in Vitamin B12. Also, wild salmon is going to be a good source of Vitamin B12.
If you’re going to go with dairy, what I would recommend obviously, absolutely, is going to be unpasteurized, non-homogenized, raw dairy. The kind our ancestors lived on. Then if you can even ferment that dairy like kefir and yogurt from a natural, organic raw milk source, that’s going to be your best bet in terms of getting B12 from dairy.
If you want to get it tested, you should ask your doctor for a homocysteine test. It’s a blood test which will show this inflammatory marker and then methylmalonic acid test, MMA test, is a much more accurate, specific test for B12 versus a serum blood test, which is not as accurate for B12 deficiencies.
I hope it helps.
Take care, guys. God bless.
